My Approach

My mission is to build my students’ confidence, creativity, and independence through the learning of musical instruments. As an educator, I know that joy and exploration keep learners invested, and seek to weave these feelings into every stage of the learning process. My curriculum distills musicianship into 3 core skills that make music come alive:  we will learn to Listen, Feel, and Jam.

If you Listen, your favorite songs become treasure troves for learning to play music. We will train our ears to hear how different instruments contribute to the overall song. This practice develops the musical ear– our ability to discern how different pitches and rhythms relate.

When you Feel the music, you get a song’s beat into your body. We will use movement exercises, verbal counting, metronomes, hand percussion, and other aides to deepen our internal sense of rhythm.

Learning to Jam means learning to share your music with others, whether that be in a world-touring rock band, summer camp, or family sing-along. Every lesson, we will play together in guided jams that build confidence and expression.
